I imagine he was pretty angry but couldn't be too shouty about it so I tried to get that sort of look

Image: Robert Catesby is looking really quite angry, he’s not shouting about how angry he is, he’s got a sort of seething anger.

King James IV at this point wasn’t really enamoured with his wife (who he had a few kids with), nor his mistress (who he broke up with a few years ago), but instead a male lover (he had three main male partners through his life). So it’s not really that he thinks of infidelity, but religious betrayal. Previous rulers made it law that if you respected the pope then you disrespect the monarch and that’s treason~ so at least he didn’t execute his wife I suppose.

in the future there will be recusancy mentioned though

’cause like, a lot of people were fined

sometimes I misspelt it as recumbency but that’s lying down

Gaol pronounced jail if you’re unfamiliar. I’m guessing The Clink. In jails/gaols there previously wasn’t any torches or oil lamps or anything (note: you can’t have a smokeless torch put in a room on tv they’re gas lamps) so it was just really dark if there was no window, which if you’re in a jail in the basement there wasn’t. After a while people’s eyes would entropy from lack of use.
